EXAMS - WHAT ARE THEY FOR...???

Exams....Exams.....Exams.....What are these words, where did they come from...i dont have any idea...u have any??....from the day i reached the secondary education i lost all my battle for the first mark with my counterparts. That day i asked myself what are these exams goin to do my life?...are the exams the best judge of a students talent and potential...i would say a big NO!!...

Take a student who gets a aggregate of 90 and another student who gets a mere pass...what our society decides on the child who gets a mere pass...he is pushed back in all fronts...since because he gets a mere pass it doesnt mean he is unfit for education its actually the other way round the education becomes unfit for him.

We boast ourselves having educational institutions which are best in the world...but what are we doing in these institutions...we make the students cram...vying eachother for marks...we dont understand the inborn talent or the interset in a child in stead we all push them to our will...we are only concerend about how to get the top mark in the class...we don encourage the child to think on its own...the sense of marks gets into the child and it is not able to think on its own in stead it has to concentrate only on marks....

where are we headin???....is the question i ask myself whenever i sit for a exam...a student may mug all the facts and figures and reproduce it like a xerox copy in the exam..but what about the one who cant mug????....he may not have the ability of mugging but he may have the talent of remodeling a motor...but we dont encourage that we say the student is dull and average...

The system has to change we don need marks and grades to support our life we need something practical knowledge to sustain in this world...The greats in this world are not educated the biggest example was einstein...i am not saying education is ruthless and we need to boycott it completley...we need a radical change we need to throw away our useless grading and marking system and try and analyse the child based on its and talent and interest.

I totally agree with you. I have been teaching for about 4 years in an elementary school in Mexico so I'm kind of new on this. And I have found that making exams is not the best way to grade students. I prefer to inspire them to try and make mistakes while learning English and they feel much more confident. But the system of education indeed have to be changed, but I doubt it will soon. Unfortunately, which is a great shame. Greetings from MX :)
