TATA goes Wi - Fi...

Tata Communications Limited, the new name for formerly state-owned Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited(VSNL) is seeking new pastures in WiMAX technology based broadband services to target individuals and home computer users.

Wi-MAX is a next generation technology that provides high speed wireless Internet access and connects individual homes and business as far as 30 miles from the central site with long-range frequencies.

The international long distance carrier had commercially rolled out broadband WiMAX for corporate customers in Banglore last May.

A considerable amount of our capital expenditure of Rs 2250 crore for this year will be earmarked for the WiMAX broadband rollout, says Addapali

BSNL also recently announced expression of interest to roll out WiMAX based broadband in rural areas and is expected to launch services across cities in 2008. Besides, Dishnet is also an early player in the area.
